  1. 1930- . French socialist politician, prime
  2. minister from 1988. A former radical, he
  3. joined the Socialist Party (PS) 1973,
  4. emerging as leader of its moderate
  5. social-democratic wing. He held ministerial
  6. office under Mitterrand 1981-85. Rocard
  7. trained at the prestigious Ecole National
  8. d'Administration, where he was a classmate of
  9. Jacques Chirac. He became leader of the
  10. radical Unified Socialist Party (PSU) 1967,
  11. standing as its presidential candidate 1969.
  12. Having gone over to the PS, Rocard
  13. unsuccessfully challenged Francois Mitterand
  14. for the party's presidential nomination 1981.
  15. After serving as minister of planning and
  16. regional development 1981-83 and of
  17. agriculture 1983-85, he resigned Apr 1985 in
  18. opposition to the government's introduction
  19. of proportional representation. In May 1988,
  20. however, as part of a strategy termed
  21. `opening to the centre', the popular Rocard
  22. was appointed prime minister by Mitterrand.
